Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
