Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
